5.1       INTRODUCTION

The developed system is applied to study area Adyar Taluk and East Cost Road.

API And WSI Methods is used to analyse the accident data

Accident-prone stretches of different roads may be arrived by the number accidents per unit length of the road. The methods namely Accident Prone Index (API) method and Weighted Severity Index (WSI) method have been adopted to identify the accident prone spots of NH4 and NH46. The methods are briefly enumerated below.

a)         Accident Prone Index Method (API)

In this methods the index value per unit length is computed based on the number of accidents occurred. It consists of three major components viz.

  1. consistency
  2. tendency
  3. level

The rating of accidents according to the above-mentioned factors is given below in table 5.1.

Table 5.1 Rating of Accident Components

Consistency (maximum points 30)

1.     One or more than one accident every year.

2.     One or more than one accident for two years.

3.     One or more than one accident for one year only.

4.     No accident in three years.

Tendency

  1. Two time increase in three years.
  2. One time increase three years.
  3. No increase
  4. No accident in three years

Level

  1. Number of accidents three years 6 and above.
  2. Number of accidents three years between 2 & 5.
  3. Number of accidents three years between 1 & 2.
  4. No accident in three years.

By using the above table, the score for any stretches can vary from 0-100. the stretches having the maximum score of hundred have been taken as more- accident prone.

b)               WEIGHTED SEVERITY INDEX

In this method, the points are given according to the severity of accidents and the points for various type of causalities adopted are

                        For fatal                                  -           32        points

For grievous injury                  -           9          points

For simple injury                     -           1          point

The weighted severity index can then be computed as follows. Firstly, the weighted severity total (WST) for each stretch has to be computed.

And then it has to be normalized with respect to traffic volume as indicated below.

                        WST (J)-WEIGHTED SEVERITY TOTAL

A                     - Number of accidents of i th type viz.fatal, grievous injury                                                      and simple injury.

W                    - Weight of i th type of accident

WSI(j)             - Weighted severity index for jth stretch

PCU(j)             - Volume of traffic in passenger car units on j th stretch

                        K                     - 10,000, a constant factor
